I used the same trick on my companions, but many of them already came with non-armor restricted abilities so I just had to be careful with them. In order to prevent the AI from using them while I wasn't controlling my own character, I leveled the 'restricted by armor' abilities exclusively and then just wore armor so the AI couldn't use powers when I wasn't looking. The difficulty I used was Normal, but KOTOR 1 was hard. Their Jedi companions basically become disciples of the main character and renounce their Jedi ways even though they can use the Force, they refuse to do so. As a result, they think the only way the galaxy can be safe is if no one, Jedi or Sith, used the Force and that all Force users are a threat. What explanation I could come up with to justify the run from a roleplaying perspective is that my characters take the idea that power inevitably corrupts to the extreme because all the Sith Lords in recent memory were fallen Jedi. Obviously, it makes no sense for the Jedi companions not to use Force powers, but it felt like it makes the run way too easy if only the player didn't use the Force as you have companions for the majority of the games who can just do the Force powers for you.
